Flames licked the once great city. Many buildings lay in ruin, and those still standing bellowed with the cries of the damned. A lone child clung to her blanket on the second floor of what used to be her home. The floor gave way and left her isolated from the staircase and safety.
Two smooth lines ran down her face. Her little lungs coughed up smoke and ash. She saw someone—her mother?—across the chasm. "Help me," she begged.
"You are going to be all right," said the figure. They stood at the edge of the floor, hand outstretched. "I need you to jump, dear."
